Whitney Museum of American Art (1966)
New York, New York
The brutalist chunk of granite mass sits on the southeast corner of Madison Avenue and 75th. As a 60’s design, I can appreciate the modernistic and daring approach and the drastic contrast it must have conjured up from its brick and limestone neighbors. However, the building has such a defensive front, completely turning its back to its side streets, repressing all potential for liveliness with its massive overshadowing presence. However, the cantilevered entrance is nice and the interior burnished concrete surface creates a nice museum experience.
