The High Line
Diller Scofidio + Renfro + Piet Oudolf (planting)
New York, New York
The abandoned railway track was revived by local city planners who saw potential in the miles of elevated path. It is now one of the city’s fastest growing neighborhoods, already marked by Frank Gehry and others keenly eyeing projects in the vicinity. The weather was not permitting when we decided to visit but it was a nice stroll nevertheless. It’s interesting to see the progression from Section 1 to 2, where section 2 has more elevated plants creating an enclosed intimacy, while also continuing the peeling benches and wooden floor boards. It is still in the works, and is proposed to include more park space that reach up to the windows of the residential highrises. It would also be interesting to see the changing atmosphere of the buildings as you go through the sections, since I assume section 2 will be populated with more slender highrises.
